In 2020 the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) launched the bicentennial quilts project as part of its 200th anniversary celebrations. This community-lead project was split into two separate quilts. The patchwork quilt is comprised of 100 fabric squares - depicting planets, stars, galaxies and more - received from people across the globe. It was completed in May 2023 and has been on display in locations around London and Norwich, with more appearances planned around the UK in the latter half of 2024.
The solar system quilt, inspired by Ellen Baker's 1876 masterpiece, is still a work in progress and we need your help to finish the project. Join Annie Hogan (RAS quilt project lead and crafting enthusiast) for a two hour workshop to add your stitches to a piece of history in the making!
The workshop will involve beading (representing objects in the Kuiper belt). All materials/equipment provided, all abilities welcome - no prior sewing experience required, you must be 16 or over to attend.
